there are days that
you want to go on
being a student for-
ever. for four years
middlebury is
home, the first time
you caught yourself
referring to your
dorm as home, you
laughed, you started
to really notice life
sometime after your
first semester.
5
on campus, winter lasts forever
and the mud between you and
McCullough upsets spring,
but the reason you came here
is the people. Meg Hankins
it is only an echo of college life, a wandering ray
from a students bower that comes to greet you.
behind the curtain life much there is that will bear
recital-much that need not be told.
but within these pages the
veil has been lifted; you
behold the painted gleam of
a student's life, through the
kaleidoscope you behold
the true landscape, ever
changing in form and color.
first kaleidoscope 1873
the students all looked so together and
crunchy and just plain older that i
dreamed of the day when i too could
go to middlebury and carry my own
mug around in the back of my north
face backback or in my patigonia fleece
jacket's pocket.

personality is something that distinguishes you
from other kids, unfortunately, not everyone will
get personality, and you might not get one either,
but take heart camper! many people without
personalities have found a trick, a personality
substitute, that gets them through those formative
college years. Crampus

the first few weeks of school the biggest
calamity on campus, besides the missing

that chapel bell
1910 Kaleidoscope
that chapel bell, that chapel bell,
how many a tale its discords tell
of crazy greek and german text,
of flunked "exams" professors
vexed--
that chapel bell, that chapel bell,
how many a tale its discords tell!
how oft my breakfast had to wait,
'twas chapel time, and i was late,
how oft i wished that chapel bell
were in the deepest depths of
hell
that chapel bell, that chapel bell,
how many a tale its discords tell!
i've been in many a railroad
wreck,
played football, got it in the neck;
but these seem trifles, sad to tell,
whene'er i hear that chapel bell,
that chapel bell, that chapel bell,
how many a tale its discords tell!
and so 'twill be when i am gone,
that chapel bell will ring on,
while other tutors, other profs,
will joy in flunking other sophs.
I that chapel bell, that chapel bell,
how many a tale its discords tell!

in the real world the mountains might not be quite as green as they
are here in Vermont, and everyone probably won't have a different
color of the same patagonia jacket but we'll be prepared to meet the
world on its own terms, and middlebury will always be the place
we spent four years, the place we made our best friends, and
learned our deepest lessons.

Born in the capital,
Toddled in the west,
Minneapolis was where
You came to rest.
Till the day.
Childhood behind,
You headed east
To refine your mind.
You and Midd did it.
We couldn't be
prouder-
just hear us yelling
Louder and louder.
"Hannah Lewis is awesome!
Hannah Lewis is great!
We love you forever! Now,
Please farm in our state!"
Love, Dad & Mom
Love always from Mom, Dad, and Sage

"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by.
And that has made all the difference."
Carly, what wonderful "roads" you
have taken, Middlebury being one.
Congratulations and all our love.
Dad, Mom and Stacy.
Caroline,
Congratulations!
You are amazing...
You have been a delight...

Warning
Jenny Joseph
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
1 shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.
Robb-
You have put the puzzle of your life together well. The world around you will
enjoy viewing the results as you go forward. Love Dad
THREE WORDS, EIGHT LETTERS, ONE THOUGHT, I LOVE YOU...MOM
Robby,
1 couldn't be more blessed
to have a brother
like you. Tengo suerte, y
mi corazon esta llenia.
Love Kristy
...People are often in
such a hurry to get to
the "good life" that
they often pass it...

Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.

Congratulations and Best Wishes
Stephen, Beth and Patrick Sanders
Dear Chrissi-
"Some people come into our lives and quickly go,
some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our
hearts and we are never ever the same."
Moon-
We love you and are so proud of who you are!

-Amy-
Congratulations
and best of luck in
the years ahead.
